GWS Motorsport with Fox Motorsport secured a superb second place finish in the SPX class at the Hankook 12 Hours of Silverstone – their first appearance in the 24H Series. Debuting their brand-new Audi R8 LMS ultra GT4, we intended to use the race as an extended test for the 5.2 litre car and the team.
Jamie Stanley started Friday’s opening five-hour section of the race, with Ben Clucas taking over just as the rain started. The wet track provided difficult conditions for Ben and Glenn Sherwood who drove on slicks throughout their stints, finishing the day with an advantage of just under 90 seconds. Saturday saw the final seven hours of racing. The ambitious team continued to lead until the ninth hour, when a titanic tussle saw the Audi’s pace narrowly edged into second place as the temperatures fell.
Glenn Sherwood commented: “It’s a great feeling to be on the podium in an international race series for the first time. The weather conditions were tough because with the recent track resurfacing, the grip isn’t where it used to be, and it was actually more challenging on the greasy surface on Saturday than it was on a full-wet circuit on Friday. Between the drivers we didn’t make a single mistake, the car never missed a beat and the teamwork was spot-on. I’m delighted with the way things have gone.”
The Audi’s next 24H Series outing will be in Portugal on July 7-8.
